Bikes on public transport Rome

The number of Bikes increase everyday here in Rome and the public transportation system tries to go bike-friendly. To carry bikes on train, metro and buses, is still something unusual here’s in Rome and sometimes not easy. Here’s some useful information to move in and out of Rome using bicyle and public transportation.

About folding bicycles in Rome / Italy:

You can take a folded bike anywhere and anytime if it is packed in its bag (most of the time unnecessary). Metro, buses and trains in Rome and around Italy will accept your folding bicycle for free if it’s packed, if it’s no packed it will depend on the place/ticket collector.

Bikes on Metro A / B / B1

Underground lines A and B-B1 welcome bikes from Monday to Friday, 5.00 AM to 7.00 AM – 10.00 AM to 12.00 and from 8.00 PM to the end of the service; at weekends and on public and local holidays, bikes may be carried at any time while in service.

BUSES

791, 83, 118, 412, 673, 715, 772, 120F and 180F welcome bikes while in service on public and local holidays, and in August. Bikes can be carried on workdays, 5.00 AM to 7.00 AM – 10.00 AM to 12.00 and from 8.00 PM to the end of the service. The same goes for the three Roma Tpl routes: 232, 543 and 983.

TRAM

On “Jumbo” tram routes 2, 3, 8, and in part, 5, 14 and 19 with the same rules of buses.

ROMA – LIDO

Roma-Lido, welcome bikes from Monday to Friday, 5.00 AM to 12.30 PM and from 8.00 PM to the end of the service; at weekends and in August, bikes may be carried at any time while in service.

The vehicles on which bicycles can be carried are easy to recognise, thanks to the symbol showed at the top of this page.

TRAINS

Bikes are allowed on Regional and Urban trains with a ticket of EUR 3.5, which is valid 24 hours.

It is possible to carry your bike for free in the appropriate case ( max 80 x 110 x 40 cm) in all these trains: regionale, IntercityNotte , Intercity, Frecciarossa, Frecciargento o Frecciabianca.

It is possible to carry your bike also on some international trains. The fare is 12 euro.
